Magbukon word corpus : [manuscript] a proposed contextualized mother tongue inventory for multilingual learners / Paulo Joseph P. Santos

The Aeta Magbukon community has by far experienced a depletion in their population. Scattered in various towns in Bataan, the old natives can still speak fluently their own language, but the problem resides with their younger generations who have been exposed in the integration of the "Unats" or Tagalog in their vicinities. Now, the council of elders, together with the NCIP and Komisyon ng Wika, believes that the ethnic children need to be taught to speak and write using their native tongue at a very early age. This qualitative research utilized focused ethnography and corpus analysis designs. Focused ethnography only covers a partial or part-time field visits by which the researcher does not need to immerse himself/herself fully with the community. Corpus analysis includes analyzing spoken or written data (transcriptions) to come up with a set of word corpora essential to the preservation of the linguistic system of a certain group. The proponent of this study considered the MTB-MLE framework of the K to 12 Curriculum stipulated under R.A. 10533 (Enhanced Basic Education Act of the Philippines 2013) upon constructing a contextualized language inventory. Furthermore, it was also based on the Indigenous People's Education Curriculum (an approach applied by the teachers in Bahay-Wika of the Aeta Magbukon tribe). There were a total of 8 participants in this study (five from Sitio Matalangao, Bagac, Bataan and the other three from Bahay Wika). They are college students, council members, and three elder teachers from the community. Using the verbal and photo-elicitation methods, the proponent of this study was able to know the most common situations and practices where the Magbukon use their language, arriving in a total of 270 Magbukon words translated into Filipino and English that may serve as a learning reference by the beneficiaries of this research. The words were the results of the corpus analysis using AntConc (a software corpora developed by Sir Laurence Anthony of Waseda University in Japan). In total, there are 15 contexts included as the contents of the proposed material. In addition, the proposed materials used Magbukon and Filipino languages for easy reference. Lastly, the researcher created 15 sample semi-detailed lesson plans containing various language teaching approaches that can guide teachers in teaching: Daily vocabulary, grammar-translation method, situational language teaching, turn-taking, repetition, communicative approach, and community language learning. This study is patterned also as an advocacy to promote the preservation of the dying linguistic system of our ethnic brothers and sisters in Bataan.
