The book represents the final report of the Philippine Nonprofit Sector Project (PNSP), a four- year attempt to determine the contours, underpinnings and contributions of the set of organization that lies between the state and the market. It is sponsored that les between the state and the market. It is sponsored by the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod and located in the National College of Public administration and Governance, University of the Philippines, thus connecting the two most significant institutions in my career. It also ties together my academic interests - voluntarism, public administration, comparative analysis, multi - disciplinarily, research methods, ethics and commitment. In doing so, it has allowed me to collaborate with lifelong friends as well as newly met colleagues who have now mostly moved into the first category. The institutions and interests suggest themes for an essay on "How this book came to be written" the acknowledgements. These concerns intertwine in this preface.
