By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: Balanga City : BPSU, 2017.Description: 204 leaves ; 28 cmSummary: This study aimed to determine the guidance and counseling intervention needs and potential problems of balik-aral (at risk) students of Bataan National High School (BNHS) for the School Year 2016-2017 wherein the results were used as basis for the development of a Guidance and Counseling Intervention Plans that will cater their needs. The study was conducted in Bataan National High School since it is the largest public secondary high school in the province and the cases of at risk students were diverse. Eighty-five (85) at risk students were selected purposively to participate as respondents in the study. Specifically, self-development, time management, financial management, relationships, physical, academic, basic and spiritual needs of the students were assessed. Their age, sex, marital status of parents, academic status and family monthly income were determined. Their peer, academic family, vices, financial, school and self-esteem problems were also identified. In the process of data gathering, researcher-based and focus group discussion were used. The data were analyzed statistically using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation as well as inferential statistics like Independent Sample T-test. These statistical tools were carried out using the statistic software called SPSS version 18. For the profile of the students, frequency, and percentage distribution were used while percentage, mean, and standard deviation were utilized in presenting the assessment of students' needs. On the other hand, Independent Sample T-test was used in testing the significance difference on the needs of the respondents if grouped according to their profile. Based on the findings of the study, it was revealed that at risk students were youth, male, have married parents, low performing in the classroom and belonged to an average-income family. Also, at risk students have self-development, time-management, financial management, relationships, physical, academic, basic, and spiritual needs. Potential peer, academic, family, vices, financial, school, and self-esteem problems maybe experienced by the at risk students. The null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the needs of the at risk students if grouped according to their profile was accepted for the family problems which differed based on the family monthly income. Thus there is a need to have a guidance and counseling intervention at BNHS. It was then recommended for parents of at risk students, classroom advisers and guidance counselors to have a periodic conference to discuss the problems, needs, and academic performance of the students. The Guidance and Counseling Office must design group or individual counseling programs with at risk students in order to address their needs. Also, its institutional programs like EduChild must be strengthened. The self-development, time and financial management, relationships, physical, academic, basic, and spiritual needs of at risk students must periodically assess, the potential probrlems must be addressed through group or individual counselling. The proposed Guidance and Counseling Interventions should constantly reviewed and modified based on the results of the Individual Inventory and other psychological tests.
