520 _aAlthough one single concept of what leadership remains elusive, leadership development and leadership theories have been the focus of various researches. Fifteen leaders from diverse backgrounds were selected through theoretical sampling to provide data on the phenomenon of the study. Using grounded theory methodology, a theoretical model was proposed which described the dynamics of school leadership. Related to the central phenomenon of how leaders come to be, two causal conditions were identified which would influence the demand for the development of leaders and leadership: challenges and opportunities. Intervening conditions were also identified through the data: personality; leadership definition; influence of mentors, and; past experiences. Strategies were used by the leaders to define their development such as taking action and reflection. Several consequences or outcomes of leadership development were identified namely the leader's legacy, self-awareness, resiliency and humility. Further abstraction condensed the categories into three contexts which are intent, opportunity and awareness - the trinity. Six propositions emerged from the data: school leaders lead and manage their schools with intent; an opportunity to become a leader presents itself in everyday situations; awareness to lead is composed of three initially independent concepts: awareness of self, system and people; awareness of self, system and people begin to merge as the leader progresses along his journey; as the three concepts grow and merge, the concept of people grows significantly faster and encompasses the concepts of self and system, and; the dynamics of school leadership is determined by the interaction among intent, opportunity and awareness. Resiliency was found to be the core category that describes the dynamics of school leadership in the division of Bataan.
