520 | _aThe present study investigated the intricacies in Common auxiliary verbs (is, are, was, were, am, do, does, did, has, have and had) and Modal Verb (can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, and would) encountered by the SHS students through the counting and analysis of their written outputs using the AntConc application. Specifically, it tried to identify the type of intricacies in Common auxiliary and Modal verbs found in the writings of the SHS students, to determine the prevailing patterns that can be seen in the verb intricacies identified, and among the verb intricacies, which can be classified as errors, and deviations. The methodology followed by this study is the corpus linguistics with the application of Error Analysis. With the help of the computer assisted softwares such as notepad tool and AntConc tool, the data was counted, tabulated and analyzed. Also, this study follows the framework done by Faridah Noor Mohd. in 1985 which categorizes errors into error in choice and error in form. Under the category error in choice in common auxiliary verb groups, the choice of tense has the highest number of error with almost 80% of error is committed in this category. Meanwhile, in the category error in form, insertion has the most number which 68 % of error happens under this category and only 15% of error in base form is committed. In terms of modal verbs, 54% of errors are committed under error in choice of tense while 46% is committed under error in form. Also, through this, some patterns of verb intricacies are unfolded and discussed such as the combination of verb + verb pattern for example, is + need for needs and is + strengthen for strengthens. The overuse of was is also one of the findings of the study together with the combination of was + verb to form the past form of the main verb has been found out. Therefore, this shows that a need for a more strengthened discussion of the basic rules of grammar must be incorporated in the teaching and learning process. Though, as Filipino, the acceptance and usage of Philippine English is and will be one of our assets, neglecting the basic rules of grammar still provides a lot of confusion not only with the structure but more so with the message being conveyed. Hence, a bigger and further research with regard to this kind of study is highly encouraged and be conducted within the entire province to countercheck whether the following listed patterns of error and deviations in grammar rules can now be claimed as a feature of language learning in Bataan. | ||
